The Berliner Ensemble is a renowned theatre company associated with playwright Bertolt Brecht. It was founded in East Berlin in 1949, and it continues to be a significant cultural institution.
When Bowie lived in the city, he would regularly cross over to East Berlin through Checkpoint Charlie to attend performances, before enjoying a meal at the Ganymed restaurant just across the street.
